Article on Mikey the Monkey in Poker Player Magazine

PokerShare's Chimp

Cheap publicity? Go for it, just don't try and cheapen the biggest and best poker tournament
ever.

'We think any chump can win the Main Event,' said PokerShare.com, as they tried to enter a chimp into the Big One.

A horribly, horribly misguided press release. Oh, and he can't play poker. He can eat sweets, blow raspberries and beat the poker table like the feral beast he is. And he was never entered
into the Main Event as confirmed by the WSOP's Jeffrey Pollock: 'There has been no chimp entered in the Main Event and nor will there be'.

Reading this article upset me a great deal. I had to drink some scotch and lie down for a while.

Still - if their spelling of Jeffrey Pollack's name is anything to go by, CNN has nothing to fear from the journalistic standards presented in their popular newspaper.

Hi Mikey
Dave here, the editor of PokerPlayer magazine. I saw you put our story up about you at the WSOP - thanks! And thanks for pointing out our spelling mistake. I thought I'd repay the compliment: the article's actually from PokerPlayer in the UK, and we're a magazine, not a newspaper. I can provide you with our logo if you want to change it over?

Also, we feel we may have done you a disservice and if so would like to rectify the situation. We pride ourselves on our journalistic integrity and stating, 'you can't play poker', after one (admittedly dismal) showing was a tad unfair. You might have been put off by the bright lights or the amount of people watching you.

So we'd like to give you a chance to put your 'money' where your mouth is. We propose a 'retirement' match, against PokerPlayer's News Editor, Rick Dacey. The game would be no-limit Texas Hold'em. This gives you a chance to prove that you can play the game and if you win we'll make a retraction of our aforementioned news story and give you a full two-page Q&A in the magazine.

If it turns out you can't actually play poker, that it's all a big publicity stunt, and you lose, you'll officially retire from the poker world with your tail between your legs. You won't attempt to enter any more poker tournaments and you'll publicly admit - on this forum - and in our magazine that you're sorry for trying to make a monkey of the poker world.

The challenge is set. I await your response.

Hi Dave;
Gosh I have read your article, Mikey's reply and now your reply. Boy, it's one thing when a "CHIMP" corrects your spelling and grammar, you being in the business and all and having spell check but you correcting a Chimp's grammar. I would like to point out that I really don't think that Mikey could put his tail between his legs because he is a CHIMP, a GREAT APE, you know NO TAIL.

I wonder if Mikey will even reply to this. What is in it for Mikey? I think the reason he was going to the WSOP to play was to try to earn money for his retirement and to be able to stay with his mom. I don't see any offers of the "Big Bucks" here.

You also said that if Mikey loses he will officially retire from the poker world, gosh that's a bit harsh. Is that what you would say to the other players or just because he's a bit hairy?

I think it's a good idea, BUT no retirement, and when he wins he gets all the money and Rick Dacey job and salary?
